After 14 years in operation in the Bay of Islands, and with a nautical, cultural and historical whizz of a Maori skipper at the helm, the Bay of Islands Water Taxi service has become somewhat of a legend in this part of the world.

Our ‘fleet’ comprises two Maritime-approved vessels. Our smaller wakathe 6.7 metre Scorpion design Tuara, can carry 9 pax and is our main water taxi. Our bigger waka and back-up taxi for larger groups is the Rangatira, a Bladerunner design 6.5 metre long catamaran that accommodates a maximum of 24 passengers, and features an underwater camera screening ocean life of up to 100 metres deep.

As an essential part of Wai Not Maori Adventure Tourism, an authentic Bay of Islands Maori travel operator on water, the Rangatira is our ‘flagship’ for our half- or full-day guided boat charters, and is also perfect for escorting school and student groups around the Bays on their marae adventures. See for our adventure tourism and educational programme packages.

If you’re an independent traveller who wishes to travel or take a day trip to a destination of your choice whilst gathering a wealth of insider information, the Tuara offers regular taxi services from Paihia, Russell, Waitangi and Rawhiti to several scenic spots around the Bays.

Depending on the destination and distance, water taxi prices range from $100 to $280 for the regular routes. View our regular taxi routes here. If you wish to add a destination that’s not part of our regular routes – no problem! Just give us a call or email us so we can work out a plan that works for you.
